Research in Multi-Disciplinary Teams

The majority of academic staff at CES are employed on relatively short-term research projects (two to three years’ duration) with clearly defined goals. Examples of such projects are:

An environmental and social life-cycle comparison of coal and waste as fuels involving a chemical engineer, a mechanical engineer and two sociologists

Development of dynamic mathematical optimisation procedures for the life-cycle assessment of material ‘cascades’ involving researchers with backgrounds in design and physics/engineering

A life-cycle and linear programming analysis of food production systems involving researchers with backgrounds in chemical engineering, ecology and mathematics

Two interlinked projects using a life-cycle approach to assess the environmental, social and economic implications of using bio-mass as an energy source: a European Union funded project. Researchers in the UK team have backgrounds in chemical engineering, physics and social geography

An investigation of policy instruments for environmental regulation: another European project, whose UK team comprised two psychologists, a social anthropologist, a sociologist and a chemical engineer
